Founded by the husband and wife design team, Laura and Kiran Singh, Laura & Kiran
is a wholesaler of a distinctive line of multi-purpose home furnishing fabrics
hand woven in India of cotton, silk and linen.
Laura & Kiran fabrics are known for their extraordinary richness of color. Laura and Kiran travel the world regularly to get the pulse of contemporary color and style trends, and are enthusiastic textile collectors. Laura has a degree in textile design and an extensive technical knowledge of fabric construction. She uses their collection of antique fabrics from Europe, America and Asia as a jumping off point. By simplifying the patterns and infusing them with modern color sensibilities, she is able to create contemporary designs with a hint of the past.
Laura & Kiran fabrics are used by high-end furniture manufacturers, home textile product manufacturers and specified by catalogs. In addition, they are distributed by decorative fabric jobbers and stocked by retail stores throughout the United States.
Laura & Kiran began in 1982 with a natural fiber clothing line created from their own hand-woven and hand-printed fabric designs. The line was sold in their boutique in Berkeley, California and in specialty stores across the country. In 1993, they began adapting their original ikat designs into fabrics suitable for home furnishings and took their collection to the furniture manufacturers in High Point, North Carolina.
Laura & Kiran is proud to carry on the tradition of hand weaving and trade between India and the rest of the world. The regions they work with have been weaving fabrics for centuries. India has been offering fine hand-loomed fabrics adapted to Western tastes since the 1700’s. In the days of the spice trade, traders brought the weavers hand-painted Persian miniatures for design inspiration. Today, in the age of computers, it is the artwork Laura and Kiran create in their own electronic studio that provides weavers with a source of design and allows these weavers to participate in the global marketplace. In an age of mechanization, Laura & Kiran supplies tens of thousands of yards of handcrafted fabric, while delivering superior quality to the manufacturers of America.
As Laura explains, “Ours is an eclectic approach. We draw inspiration from many sources. I love looking at old things and seeing how to make them feel modern. We came from designing for fashion, where everyone is scanning the environment all the time for new trends. That experience made us fast, flexible and open to fresh color. It led us to looking at the traditional world of home furnishing fabric in a new way.”
Kiran Singh is also an accomplished photographer, exhibiting his work internationally.
His most recent work is a book of photographs, Berkeley: The Life and Spirit
of a Remarkable Town. Laura and Kiran live in Berkeley, California in a 1906
Craftsman home.
